Abstract

This research was conducted because the concepts of dance creation frequently used as references by dance artists have largely been those formulated by Western figures, such as Alma M. Hawkins, Doris Humphrey, and others. Naturally, these Western dance theorists developed their concepts within the context of Western cultural backgrounds which are, in many respects, distinct from or even contrary to Eastern cultures. This serves as the impetus for the present study, which seeks to develop a new approach to dance creation one that aligns with the characteristics and cultural values of Eastern societies, particularly those of Indonesia. The ultimate goal is to establish a framework for dance creation that can serve as a reference for choreographers and dance artists. Furthermore, it is intended to be adopted by dance students both within their choreography coursework and in the creation of their final-year projects and to function as a scholarly reference for the field of dance, specifically regarding the practice of dance creation. To achieve this, the study employs both "insider" and "outsider" perspectives to gather data from various choreographers, observing, elaborating upon, and analyzing their individual creative processesn from the initial search for ideas to the final realization of a work of art.
